Equitable Representation in Nonprofit Marketing

In nonprofit marketing we communicate need and urgency, but do we sometimes treat our clients as props rather than people? Let's discuss how to move away from exploitative, savior-themed charity and still educate donors on our impact.

Description
Donors give more when they're moved by powerful, emotional stories of impact. And as marketers we seek narratives, gather images, and curate donor experiences from service recipients to convey impact, urgency, and need.
But in that pursuit we need to examine potentially exploitative messaging and tactics we use to raise money. Are we treating our clients as props rather than people? Is what we're doing raising money for the short term but perpetuating social problems in our community?
How can we educate our donors away from potentially exploitative, savior-themed charity and still move them to give?
Join Mary Nguyen, Communications & Public Outreach Manager with Cultivate KC, and Denise St. Omer, Vice President of Grantmaking and Inclusion Initiatives with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, to dive head first into this topic. We will discuss:
Mary Nguyen leads an extensive career in advocacy and nonprofit work. The daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, Mary was born and raised in Kansas City before earning a degree in Journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She is the Communications & Public Outreach Manager at Cultivate Kansas City, where she develops content and strategies to support refugee farmers. In addition, Mary is a community speaker, and volunteer.
Denise St. Omer oversees all major grants and discretionary funds, and leads equity and inclusion work as Vice President of Grantmaking and Inclusion Initiatives for the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. With an asset base of more than $2.4 billion, the Community Foundation ranks among the top 1 percent of community foundations in the country. Denise trains and speaks nationally as a member of the Equity Advisory Group for Grantmakers for Effective Organizations and was recognized in the 2016 class of Ingram's Women Executives of Kansas City.
"As a white male working as a grant writer for an org. that primarily serves clients of color, I felt this webinar was particularly important to my work so I can accurately yet appropriately introduce and talk about those we serve."
"I shared this with my marketing team and we are meeting to talk about how our organization can do better, starting with re-checking our consent forms."
